1907
The
Hon. M. Scott on what is now prime housing development situated
in the area bounded by Clifford, Normanby and Sutton Streets, and
Brandy Creek Road.
Opening day 29th June required ferns to be cut in necessary places
- primitive.
1910
The Committee leased 80 acres of land, later to become a major portion
of present course.
1912
The Committee on portion of a 400 acre property "Killarney",
with rental payment a mere peppercorn, the land owner Mr. O'Connor
receiving Life Membership for his generosity over 13 years occupation.
1926
Mr Syd Bennett designed an 18-hole course on 80 acres of land purchased
for £1774 together with land leased across Sutton Street accommodating
two holes.
1946
Mr George Lowe redesigned the course when land leased had to be
relinquished due to
Housing Commission acquisition.
1969
Mr George Naismith altered holes 1, 2, 3, 6, and 8 after the purchase
of 7 1/2 acres of land
on the northern boundary.
1981
Mr Kevin Hartley designed an excellent 1st 9 holes given the terrain,
after a further purchase of 20 acres
on the northern most boundary, part of this plan not being adhered
to in its entirety.
1990
3 acres of land purchased to provide a "buffer zone" for
holes 6 and 8.
1997
Michael Clayton and Associates contracted to design and oversee
implementation of future overall plan, priorities to provide automatic
watering system (2/3 completed)
to enable Legend couch to be successfully established.
Mr
Tony Kelly's endeavours saw the formation of the Warragul Country
Club and a change in clubhouse siting. With the change in name and
the building of a new clubhouse in 1995 and a professional shop
some short time later, the Golf Club was relieved of financial responsibilities,
often difficult in country areas due to lack of members and enforced
low subscription fees. The installation of Tattersalls poker machines
coupled with increased revenue from improved facilities, excellent
bistro and increase in members (currently 701) has meant improvement
in course machinery in particular together with capital improvement
under the proposed overall plan.
COURSE
Although
short in metreage, overall length 5,633 metres, the Warragul course
proves a serious
challenge with it's narrow tree lined fairways, small greens and
solid par 3's (3)
average length 181 metres from championship tees.
This
is one of the reasons several members commencing their golfing activity
at this course
have performed so creditably as proven in results listed hereunder.
CLUBHOUSE
TODAY
The Club enjoys some of the best clubhouse facilities in country
Victoria.
The bistro enjoys panoramic views of the course, well organised
bar, luxurious members lounge,
a gaming room that contains 45 machines and fully stocked On Course
Golf Shop.

HISTORICAL
SNIPPETS
Mark Roberts
playing the 15th hole struck a magpie in flight headfirst,
embedding its beak into the ball (Happening recorded in Argus "Believe
it or not" segment).
The beak in ball took its place in the trophy cabinet, only to disintegrate
some years later.
HOLE
IN ONE HIGHLIGHTS
Bill
McLaughan scored 3 aces in a two-year period
all on the short 127 yards 4th hole, once in 1954, twice in 1955.
Nick Tsokoukis ( 'Nicky Wheelbarrow' ) scored two aces on the Par
4 first hole in a period of two years.
Jason Dawes aced the Par 4 16th hole ( now the 6th ).
ALBATROSS
Two members have scored an albatross on seperate Par 5's
at Warragul, several years apart.
The coincidence is that they were both playing in a group that contained
the same playing partner.
Matthew Ashton holed out for 2 on the dogleg 8th hole with a 3 iron,
whilst partnering his father-in-law, Peter McNulty.
Paul McNulty holed out for 2 on the dogleg 12th with a 9 iron,
while partnering with his father, you guessed it - Peter McNulty
!
Peter is a very respected member of the Club,
- and there were two other players in each group !!
Pete is always available for a game....but it's a hard act to follow
!!
HIGHLIGHT
The
voluntary effort by members (female and male, too numerous to mention
individually)
responsible for many of the various catering activities, which contributed
to the purchase of
23 acres of land at a cost of $60,000, and the sowing and harvesting
of a grain crop
on newly purchased land in 1981.
